science Flashcards
Analogous structures
Structures that resemble each other but did not evolve from a common source.
Homologous structure
Structures that resemble each other and evolved from a common ancestor.
Vestigial structures
structures that serve no use to an organism. They are residuals of ancestors.
Fossil evidence
fossilized remains of an organism
molecular evidence
evidence for evolution in DNA, Amino Acid sequences, and proteins.
embryonic evidence
similarities between organisms during early stages of development
plant adaptations
Changes a plant makes in order to improve it’s or it’s offspring’s chance of survival.
animal adaptations
Changes an animal makes in order to improve it’s or it’s offspring’s chance of survival.
natural selection
Survival of the fittest
Cladogram
a diagram that shows different groups of animals and how they are related
Evolution
A change in traits within a species over time
tetrapod
A four legged creature
Difference between cladogram and tree of life
Cladogrm-Simple
Tree of life-More complex, shows time
How does climate affect genetic variation
similar climate means different creatures will evolve similar traits to be better suited to that climate
How do plants make food
Photosynthesis
