Science Flashcards
wish I knew
Radiation
Transfer of heat by electromagnetic waves (mostly infrared)
Conduction
Transfer of heat between a warmer object/ substance and a cooler one that it is touching.
Convection
Transfer of heat through the movement of a fluid (due to differences in density- warmer fluids rise/ cooler fluids sink)
Angle of insolation
Angle of Insolation: the angle that light strikes the Earth.
What happens when the angle of insolation is more direct?
its radiation is more concentrated/ focused, so more intense.
What happens when the angle of insolation is less direct
its radiation is more spread out, and therefore less intense.
March Equinox
Around 3/20
Neither, ecuador
June Solstice
Around 6/20
Northern, tropic of cancer
September Equinox
Around 9/20
Neither, equator
December Solstice
Around 12/20
Southern, tropic of capricorn
Reasons for temperature differences around the world:
- Angle of Insolation (influenced by season/ latitude/ time of day)
- Hours of sunlight
- Specific heat (amount of energy required to heat up a substance / water = slower)
- Albedo (Dark buildings)
- Altitude (higher u go up = colder)
- Moving air masses (cold = Canada, warm= mexico)
