Science Flashcards
TEST
To scale
the relative size of things, it’s more realistic, but it’s not as useful.
Distance (how far) and size (big or small)
Not to scale
the model is NOT exactly true to real life → more useful in science.
Model
an object, diagram, or computer program that helps us understand something
by making it simpler or easier to see (It represents things that are too small, or too big).
Terminator
border (terminator) between light and dark sides of the Moon.
Half of the Moon is always illuminated and the other half is always dark
Light from the sun travels in straight lines, some of the light hits the half of the Moon that faces toward the sun while the rest travels past the Moon entirely.
Pattern
something we observe to be similar over and over again
we see the same Moon phases in the same order
Orbit
the nearly circular path a smaller object (like the Moon) travels around a larger object (like Earth)
How to make a full orbit
The moon takes ONE month to orbit around the Earth and conclude a cycle of Moon phases
Lunar eclipse
when the Moon is completely dark
Facts about the Lunar eclipse
The Moon is completely dark because Earth blocks sunlight from hitting the Moon.
Lunar eclipses can only happen when Earth is between the Sun and the Moon, BUT Lunar eclipses do NOT happen every time Earth is between the Sun and the Moon.
Lunar eclipses can ONLY happen when the moon is in the Full Moon phase.
Shadows in space
A lunar eclipse results when the Moon passes through the Earth’s Umbra shadow.
