Science Flashcards
List the two defining characteristics of all waves.
All waves have a back and forth motion and transfers energy.
For each wave, list the medium through which it transmits.
Spring
Ocean
Sound
Spring: through metal or plastic (slinky)
Ocean: through water
Sound: through air particles
How is a sound wave made when a bell rings? How does the sound wave travel from the bell to your ear?
When a bell rings a pulse of energy is created that sends vibrations through the air particles as compression waves to your ears.
What happens when you increase the amplitude of a sound wave?
When a sound wave’s height increases the sound gets louder.
How would you describe the relationship between wavelength and frequency?
When the frequency of waves increases, the wavelength between the waves gets shorter and the energy increases.
Draw two waves that have the same wavelength but a different amplitude and then identify the wave that transfers more energy and explain why it has more energy
The bottom wave has more energy because it has a higher amplitude. Remember increased amplitude requires more FORCE. Applying more force requires more energy.
Draw two waves that have the same amplitude but different wavelengths and identify the wave that is transferring more energy and explain why it has more energy
The bottom wave, WAVE B, has more energy because it has a higher frequency.
An increase in frequency results in a higher measurement of Hertz (waves per sec.)
Remember increasing frequency requires more SPEED. More speed requires more energy.
