1
Q

Osmosis

A

A form of diffusion that involves water. The water content in a cell must remain the same. Osmosis allows cells to maintain this water limit and is extremely important for the life of the cell.

Q

Osmosis in preserving food

A

Salt and sugar preserve food because they kill micro-organisms.

  • Creates a lower concentration of water outside the cells of micro-organisms than inside their cells.
  • Osmosis occurs when drawing water out of the micro-organisms until they are no longer functional.
