Science Flashcards
Osmosis
A form of diffusion that involves water. The water content in a cell must remain the same. Osmosis allows cells to maintain this water limit and is extremely important for the life of the cell.
Diffusion
The movement of particles from a higher concentration to a lower concentration.
Permeable
Object allows water and air to easily pass through. E.g. Cotton, tissue
impermeable
Object does not allow air or water to pass through. E.g. Plastic bag
semi-permeable
Only allows some substances to pass through. E.g. Cell membrane
Independent Variable
Type of water (Salt or Distilled)
Dependent Variable
Size (Smaller, Bigger, Stays the same)
Control Variables
Brand, Temperature, Water Level (amount), Time, Location, Size of Beaker.
Osmosis in preserving food
Salt and sugar preserve food because they kill micro-organisms.
- Creates a lower concentration of water outside the cells of micro-organisms than inside their cells.
- Osmosis occurs when drawing water out of the micro-organisms until they are no longer functional.
