Science! Flashcards
How does hidden trait reappear in F2?
When the hybrid plants self pollinate, a few offspring will have 2 recessive alleles and show the recessive trait.
How does genetics relate to the study of DNA?
DNA is makes up of genes
multiple alleles
the alternative forms of the same gene so they influence the same trait.
How do muscles make bones move?
To move the bone up, one muscle contracts and the other relaxes.
To move it back down, the first muscle must relax and the other will contract.
Functions of skeletal system?
Bones give the body shape and support.
Protects organs
Store minerals for body to use later.
Makes blood cells (marrow)
Functions of skin system
Skin forms a protective barrier keeping bad things out and good things in
Produces vitamin D (when in the sun)
Gathers information about the environment
Maintain homeostasis (body temp)
Eliminates wastes through sweating
How does skin help maintain homeostasis?
When you are cold, the blood vessels constrict/close a little, less blood flows and therefore less heat is lost.
When you are hot, the blood vessels dilate/open allowing more blood to flow and more heat to be lost.
arteries
large vessels that carry blood away from the heart. smaller and smaller until the vessels are one cell wide in the capillaries.
where does fertilization occur?
Fertilization occurs in the fallopian tube.
Purpose of uterus
Two options:
After fertilization, zygote floats to uterus to implant and grow
If no fertilization, myometrium contracts and pushes out thicken endometrium lining of uterus along with unfertilized egg (period)
. Eggs in ovaries?
A female is born with all the eggs they will have in their life. Then once a month after puberty one egg is matured and released.
4 main parts of the reproductive system?
Ovary–keeper and developer of egg/sex cells, produce hormones
Fallopian Tube–connector of ovary to uterus
Uterus–space for growing zygotes/babies
Vagina–tube connecting uterus to outside of body
