Science - 1.3 and 1.4 Dynamic Earth Flashcards
What happens where Earth’s plates meet?
Convergent Boundary, Divergent boundary, or Transform Boundary
How do large mountain ranges form on land?
The movement of the tectonic plates creates Fold mountains and Fault mountains by subduction
How do volcanic landscapes form?
When the hot spot shoots lava out of the plate, it forms a volcano. The plate moves, so the hot spot goes to different places.
How do earthquakes effect Earth’s surface?
They result from the build up and rapid release of stress along active boundaries.
Besides plate motion, what else creates major features on Earth?
Impact caters create giant, circular dents in Earth’s surface caused by meteoroid strikes.
Convergent Boundary
Plates move towards each other
Divergent Boundary
Two plates move apart from each other
Transform Boundary
Plates slide horizontally past each other
Fold mountains
When a convergent boundary, under extreme pressure, folds or crumbles upwards over millions of years
Subduction
A denser plate is formed under a less dense plate.
Fault block mountains
Plates move apart and cause tension which stresses Earth’s crust.
Fault
A break in Earth’s crust along which movement occurs.
Volcano
A vent in Earth’s crust in which molten rock flows.
Volcanic Arc
A curved line of volcanoes that forms parallel to a plate boundary.
Earthquake
The rupture and sudden movement of rocks along a break or a crack in Earth’s crust.
