What is meant by cell cycle?
a sequence of growth and division that cells undergo which has 3 main stages.
What is meant by interphase?
First stage of the cell cycle. The cell grows to its mature size and structure, the DNA is replicated, the ER grows, new ribosomes are made, enzymes are produced, and mitochondria and chloroplasts are copied. The cell prepares to divide and produces things that will help it divide.
What is meant by mitosis?
Middle stage of cell cycle. Mitosis has 4 phases (first to last): prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase.
What is meant by prophase?
Chromatin condenses into doubled rods called chromosomes. Each leg is called a chromatid, and the thing that holds it all together is called a centromere.
What is meant by metaphase?
The chromosomes line up at the center and are attached to spindle fibers.
What is meant by anaphase?
Centromeres split and chromatids separate. Chromatids move towards opposite poles along the spindle fibers. A complete set of chromosomes is assembled at each pole.
What is meant by telophase?
Nuclei form at the opposite poles. Chromosomes uncoil. DNA on one cell have been equally divided into 2.
What is meant by cytokinesis?
Last stage of cell cycle. The cytoplasm divides and distributes the organelles into the 2 new cells. Each daughter cell has the same number of chromosomes as the original. At the end, the cycle starts all over again.
Explain DNA replication.
The 2 sides of the DNA molecule unwind. Nitrogen bases pair up on each half of the DNA molecule. The order will be the same as the original.
