Science Flashcards
What is CNS ? (central nervous system)
contains the brain and spinal column
What is PNS? peripheral nervous system
contains a network of cells that join the rest of the body
What are the two parts of the nervous system?
Central nervous system (CNS)
Peripheral nervous system (PNS)
What are the 4 main components of Neurons?
- Cell Body
- Dendrites
- Axon
- Knobs
What are the two types of neurons?
- Motor Neurons
- Sensory Neurons
What is Effectors?
Muscles or Glands
What does Motor Neurons do?
carry messages from the CNS to effectors.
What does Sensory Neurons do?
carry messages from cells in the sense organs to the brain and spinal cord.
What are the sense organs?
Eyes, Ears, Tounge, Skin
What is a Receptor?
Receptors detect changes in environment and send nervous impulses along the nervous system to the brain and then the effector.
What is a Reflex action?
a automatic and response to a stimulus
How does a message get from a receptor to an effector during a
reflex arc?
A receptor detects a stimulus and sends a signal along through
the nervous system to the effector which responds to the
stimulus.
What is a reflex arc?
The reflex arc is the pathway that the nerve impulse takes during
a reflex action.
