Science 10 Flashcards
What is matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space
What is a pure substance? Give two examples.
A substance with all the same particles that make up the substance ex.) elements and compounds
What is a mixture? Give two examples.
A combination of two or more pure substances ex.) solutions and mechanical mixtures
What is a physical property
Describes a CHARACTERISTIC of a substance that can be OBSERVED without changing it
What is a chemical property?
A CHARACTERISTIC of a substance that describes how it REACTS when it CHANGES into a new substance(s)
Physical change
A change that DOES NOT change the CHEMICAL COMPOSITION
Chemical change
A change that changes a substance into a NEW SUBSTANCE
Indicators of physical change
Change in shape/form
Change of state (solid, liquid, gas)
Indicators of a chemical change
Bubbles of gas produced
Heat/light produced
Precipitate formed
Colour change
What 2 subatomic particles are approximately the same size?
Protons and neutrons
Where do you find protons, neutrons, and electrons in an atom?
Protons: nucleus
Neutrons: nucleus
Electrons: orbiting the nucleus
How does the size of an electron compare to a proton?
Elections are much smaller than a proton
On the periodic table, where do you find the metals and what is their charge?
Metals are found on the left side of “the staircase” and has a positive charge.
On the periodic table, where do you find the non metals and what is their charge?
Non-metals are found on the right side of the”the staircase” and has a negative charge
On the periodic table, where do you find the metalloids and what is their charge?
Metalloids are touching “the staircase” except for aluminum(Al) and charge depends on where it is touching
