Sciam Mind Flashcards
What three methods are an option to use, but may only be valid is certain scenarios?
Elaborative interrogation (why, why, why is this the case?) Self explanation (how do I know this to be the case? What is new about this? What does this change?) Interleaved practice (mix apples with oranges)
What are the two primary effective ways to learn efficiently?
Self testing via practice tests / flash cards
And
Distributed learning spacing out study and review periods
What’s wrong with underlining and rereading?
They take too long for lack of effect. Really can be used to make self tests or flash cards
Second rereading is okay, esp if helping make flash cards or tests, but drops off after that. Read actively and question upfront to speed understanding….
What are the five stages of creative breakthrough?
Explore ( wander w open mind, step into new areas and outside comfort zone )
Focus ( practice, skill devt, study )
Incubate ( sleep on it or immerse self in another activity )
Insight (loose connections, less visual processing )
Follow through ( share test refine ideas )
What is difference between analysis of problem directly, and allowing insight?
I say both must be combined…insight probably more effective, but needs to be primed.
Practice, skill, study, needed for expertise, but creativity comes when experience applied to new domain
Describe the attributes of bvsr, via the mountain metaphor (what geniuses do to create expertise). Blind variation and selective retention
Trial and error (superfluidity and backtracking)
Basically, tentatively try different paths up mountain, each time reaching dead end, then going back to where a previous branch was followed, sometimes reusing old trashed ideas
What are three other traits of geniuses ?
- Make exceptional contributions
- Must master a domain first (genetics help speed)
2a. Or create a domain through combining other ones - Try millions of ideas and fail
- Have many different interests/hobbies
What did Schopenhauer say about genius?
Talent hits a target no one else can hit. Genius hits a target no one else can see.
