SCI W1 Volcano Flashcards
An opening in the earth’s crust from which lava, ash, and hot gasses flow or are ejected during an eruption.
Volcano
Known as the mouth of a volcano.
Crater
A basin/bowl shaped depression at the top of the volcone where the vent is located.
Crater
The opening where an eruption takes place.
Vent
A pipe that carries liquid material such as magma.
Conduit
A hot fluid or semi-fluid material below or within the earth’s crust that is usually made from molten rocks inside the earth.
Magma
Rock or magma is expelled from a volcano during an eruption.
Lava
Rocks will go to the asthenosphere to melt then have molten rocks (magma)
Oceanic crust
Dependent on the plates which form the top layer on the mantle
Subduction
A region of high volcanic activity not located at any plate boundary.
Hotspot.
when volcano moves.
Tectonic plate
currently active if it is erupting lava, releasing gas or generating seismic activity.
Active volcanoes
are volcanoes that are not currently active, but potential to erupt.
Inactive volcanoes
have no records of eruption.
Extinct volcanoes
Least destructive
Shield volcanoes
Board, gently sloping landform built by many layers of low-viscous lava flows.
Shield volcanoes
Known as Scoria cone
Cinder cone
Destructive
Cinder cone
explosive eruptions, small but steep slopes, pyroclastics.
Cinder cone
Known as Stratovolcano
Composite Volcano
most destructive
Composite Volcano
one constructed of alternating layers of pyroclastic materials and solidified lava flows.
Composite Volcano
With high silica content
Composite Volcano
A volcanic crater that is formed when a part of the wall of the crater collapses
following an explosive eruption
Caldera
