focuses on that humans are motivated by our own free will, not a higher power (mid 18th century)

punishment should fit the crime, law should apply equally regardless of social, economic or religious considerations

in reducing it, moving away from reliance of capitol punishment
when did the positivist school emerge?
19th century
what is the positivist school interested in?
causes of crime, it advocates individual treatment of offenders and punishments to suit criminal, rather than crime. social causes or environments may dictate peoples behaviour. this school was created by Lombroso
what did durkehim believe about crime?
it is normal, we can identify it and make norms
what did Marx believe about crime?
economic base of society effects crime in society
