Q

What are the current rules?

A

In a series circuit the current is the same through every component.

In a parallel circuit current splits.

The sum of currents in each branch of a parallel circuit is equal to the current flowing through the battery

What is voltage?

A

Voltage is a measure of the energy transferred by the electrons as they flow between two points in the circuit.
Voltage can also be thought of as how hard the electrons are being pushed by the cell.
Voltage is measure in volts (V)
A voltmeter connected in parallel is used to measure voltage.
Potential difference is an alternative term for voltage used at GCSE.

Q

What is resistance?

A

The resistance of a circuit is a way of saying how difficult it is for current to flow.

As resistance is increased current decreases.

Resistance is measured in Ohms (Ω)

Q

How can fuses be used to improve electrical safety?

A

The fuse breaks the circuit if a fault in an appliance causes too much current flow.
This protects the wiring and the appliance if something goes wrong.
The fuse contains a piece of wire that melts easily.
If the current going through the fuse is too great, the wire heats up until it melts and breaks the circuit.
