What is the process for special education?
A
- Child is identified as needing SPED
- Child is evaluated and eligibility is decided
- Child is found eligible: one or more broad range of disabilities (physical, learning, emotional, neuro, developmental)
- IEP meeting scheduled
- IEP meeting held and goals written: academic, developmental and functional needs of child (could include employment and independent living) Common core standards might guide the IEP but it doesn’t direct it
- Services provided
- Progress is measured and reported to parents
- IEP reviewed at least annually
- Child is reevaluated

What is Section 504?
A
- Children not qualified for SPED
- Additional funds not provided
- Consent not required but need notice
- No IEP
- Has a disability
- Has equal access to education! May receive accommodations and modifications; (Accommodations: expected to know same material, just given ex: more time
Modification: material known is changed: ex: count to 5 instead of 100; Consider: scheduling, setting, materials, instruction/presentation, student response)
