Q

What is the difference between cultural humility and cultural competency?

A

The difference between cultural competency and cultural humility and cultural competency is that cultural humility is more of an active learning process. Its the process of learning about the different values of cultures of different groups, religions, ethnicities, races, sexual orientations, and identities and the way that these identities impact how they experience and navigate the world and its the understanding that I don’t know everything there is to know about these identities. I’m still learning and I’m always learning. On the other hand I think cultural competency is much more finite. Its the end product and ultimate goal of cultural humility when you’ve learned and have a complete understanding of these identities and how they impact how we navigate the world.

Q

Why SUNY Upstate and rural NY?

A

What really attracted me to SUNY Upstate was the emphasis placed on community service and engagement. Growing up in a large, tight-knit family, community is something that has always been very important to me. Much like in other Hispanic cultures, the idea that your community spans far beyond your family is one that is stressed a lot and it why my parents have always emphasized to me the importance of community and service. It is why I’m so passionate about my volunteer work and about giving back to my community. That is why I really love that SUNY Upstate provides students with so many opportunities to get involved and really connect with the community through a wide variety of service learning, research, global health opportunities and electives like the Rahma and Poverello Health clinics. I think it is one thing to learn about the importance of community health and health equity outside the classroom, but learning about it within both course and volunteer work is what I believe really makes an impact in how students use and apply that knowledge into their work. Not only are these the experiences where you get to learn about the community you serve, health equity, and the social determinants of health and health disparities impacting your community first hand, but these are also the experiences where you learn how to really carry yourself not just as a physician, but a person with compassion, kindness, and empathy for those around you.

Also, location is a very big reason why I’m interested in SUNY Upstate. New York is home for me and it will always be home. Even when I was in Philadelphia, while it was such a new and exciting experience, I was always missing New York. My family is here, my roots are here, and I would consider it an honor to be able to come back with the opportunity to learn about and serve the underserved populations in both the urban and rural setting as I work to become a physician.
