Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD):
Difference between two levels of linguistic
(cognitive) performance—that which the
student can do independently and that which
he or she can do with the help of an adult or
more capable peers or adults.
Things to consider when teaching vocab:
• Vocabulary knowledge is related to reading comprehension
• If the meaning is not recognized,
comprehension will be impaired.
• If a word isn’t recognized automatically, comprehension maybe affected.
• Knowledge of a word’s meaning facilitates
accurate word recogni7on.
