Schmidt (2010) Flashcards
1
Q
Schmidt (2010) introduces a fourth form of institutionalism, what is this and what does it mean?
A
Discursive Institutionalism = how ideas and discourse shape institutions and enable change
2
Q
What two key components of DI does Schmidt (2010) mention
A
- Ideas (substantive dimension) = types of ideas and how they are justified
- Discourses (interactive dimension) = coordinative discourse (how do actors construct ideas) and communicative discourse (how are ideas presented for legitimacy)
3
Q
How does DI explain institutional change?
A
- It sees ideas and policies as dynamic
- Actors actively create, maintain and change institutions through discourse
4
Q
What other 3 aspects of institutionalism does Schmid (2010) talk about, and why do we need a 4th?
A
Rational = incentive structures, rational choices
Historical = Path dependent
Sociological = social norm and culture frames
Within these 3, change is seen as externally driven. They explain continuity rather than change.
