What is a delusion?
Fixed false belief. There is nothing that you can say or do to shake someone’s belief
What is a bizarre delusion?
A fixed belief that is impossible.
Example: someone firmly believing someone took their organs out with no stitches or proof on incisions
What does mood congruent mean?
Psychotic symptoms fit the theme of your mood
What are positive symptoms?
Hallucinations
Delusions
Disorganized speech
Grossly disorganized behavior or catatonia
What are negative symptoms?
Diminished emotional expressiveness:
Avolition
Alogia
What is avolition?
lack of motivation for goal-directed or purposeful behavior
What is alogia?
diminished speech output (not a lot of thought in mind, just staring)
What are the 5 types of hallucinations?
Tactile (touch)
Visual (sight)
Gustatory (taste)
Auditory (the most common)
Olfactory (smell)
What are the phases of schizophrenia?
(1) prodromal (2) active (3) residual
What is required in the (1) prodromal phase?
- Deterioration in functioning
- May include negative symptoms
- Attenuated psychotic symptoms (e.g., not hallucinating, but you may really believe that that announcer may have had a message for you. Not delusions but ALMOST delusional)
- In children/ adolescents, they may stop maturing and not meet their developmental milestones
What is required in the active phase?
Presence of positive symptoms
What is required in the residual phase?
There is an absence of positive symptoms, but there is a continuation of evidence of a disturbance. There could be some negative symptoms and attenuated symptoms
What are attenuated symptoms?
The belief of 99.9% or less. There may still be unusual thoughts present, but it is not a 100% belief
What is the duration criteria for Brief psychotic disorder?
1 day but no longer than 1 month
What is the duration criteria for schizophreniform?
At least 1 month but no longer than 6 months
What is the duration criteria for schizophrenia?
At least 6 months or longer
What is the key criterion for the diagnosis of delusional disorder?
The presence of one or more delusions with a duration of 1 month or longer
What is the only psychotic disorder you can have mood problems with?
Schizoaffective disorder
What does the term prominent mean?
Prominent means that hallucinations can not last longer than 1 month
How long must the active phase be in schizophrenia?
At least 1 month
What is an Erotomania delusion?
Individual’s delusions of another person being infatuated with them
What is a Persecutory delusion?
A person believes that someone is going to harm them, even though there is no evidence to support this (e.g., someone is trying to poison them)
What is a jealous type delusion?
Believes their spouse or partner is being unfaithful
What are somatic delusions?
False beliefs related to the body. Individuals may believe they have a physical defect or illness
What is thought insertion delusions?
One’s thoughts are not their own but rather belong to someone else and has been inserted into them
What are thought-broadcasting delusions?
A person believes that others can hear their inner thoughts
What are grandiose delusions?
An extraordinary belief that one is famous, omnipotent, wealthy, or otherwise very powerful or of a high status
