A
  • P: Strength = reliability
  • E: Inter-rater reliability: Different people separately reach the same diagnosis, Test-retest reliability: Same person gives the same diagnosis two different times
  • E: Osorio et al. (2019): Inter-rater = +0.97 and test-retest reliability = +0.92 for 180 diagnosis using DSM-5
  • L: So diagnosis of schizophrenia is consistently applied

Q

What is a limitation of the diagnosis and classification schizophrenia?

second peel

A
  • P: Limitation = co-morbidity with other conditions (depression)
  • E: If two groups of symptoms frequently cluster, may be better classified as one disorder
  • E: Buckley et al. (2009): 50% of people with SZ also had depression, 23% OCD
  • L: So SZ maybe not a distinct condition, this leads to misdiagnosis

Q

What is a limitation of the diagnosis and classification of schizophrenia?

A
  • P: Limitation = symptom overlap with other conditions
  • Both SZ and bipolar share positive symptoms (delusions) and negative (avolition)
  • Classification may not be inaccurate - they may not be different conditions
  • L: So diagnosis may not be inaccurate
