Schizophrenia Flashcards
What is a negative of using Family Intervention as a treatment for Schizophrenia?
A main negative of family intervention is that the only reason it works may be due to compliance of drug therapy rather than the family intervention.
What is a negative of using Cognitive Behaviour Therapy as a treatment for Schizophrenia?
The biggest negative of CBT is the lack of availability worldwide for cognitive behaviour therapists.
What is a negative of using Token Economy as a treatment for Schizophrenia?
Token economy has 3 main negatives:
- It does not treat the disorder, it only conditions the behaviours associated with the disorder.
- It cannot be generalised outside of institutions.
- It must be maintained in order to prevent deterioration.
What is a negative of using Drug Therapy as a treatment for Schizophrenia?
Drug therapy does not combat the environmental influences of schizophrenia and it may take a large dosage to control the biologic influences which may effect the patients behaviour long term e.g. sleep pattern, emotional state and fatigue.
Explain one positive of Token Economy as a treatment for Schizophrenia.
Token economy is beneficial for competence which is needed for reintegration to society.
List two positives of CBT as a treatment for Schizophrenia.
- CBT is effective for reducing symptom severity.
2. Studies have found improvements in social functioning.
List two positives of Family Intervention as a treatment for Schizophrenia.
- Cost efficient due to a lower rate of hospitalised relapse.
- Research shows improvements in mental state and functioning.
Describe Family intervention
(base rating on the number of points remembered)
- Based on expressed emotion, inclusion and sharing information
- works by developing trusting relationships between the patient and family members
- teaches more constructive ways to interact and communicate
- teaches coping skills for everyday life for patient and family members
- family members are taught a better understanding of the disorder and the ability to recognise traits of relapse for when/if it occurs
What is the difference between Typical antipsychotics and Atypical antipsychotics?
TA - used to combat positive symptoms of schizophrenia (products of an overactive dopamine system)
AA - combat positive and negative symptoms of schizophrenia.
How is schizophrenia caused biologically (main cause)?
Caused by excessive amounts of the neurotransmitter dopamine in areas of the brain associated with schizophrenia.
Describe the process of Token Economy.
A rewards system based on operant conditioning to manage behaviours. Stages of TE are as follows:
- Individual has no access to tokens and any desirable items or activities
- Individual engages in desirable behaviours or ‘target behaviours’
- Individual is given tokens for engaging in these target behaviours
- Individual trades tokens for access to desirable items or activities
Describe the process of CBT
CBT involves direct questioning where the patients beliefs are treated as a hypothesis and are examined for validity. This works as the patient realises their hallucinations aren’t real. CBT is a long-term treatment using role-play and homework assignments.
Name 2 positive symptoms of Schizophrenia.
- hallucinations
2. delusions
Name 2 negative symptoms of Schizophrenia.
- alogia (inability to speak)
2. avolition (decrease in motivation)
What is the diathesis stress model?
Interactionist approach
The diathesis stress model assumes the condition is caused from both environmental factors as well as biological and psychological factors.
Therefore for an effective treatment according to an interactionist approach both drug therapy to treat genetic factors and psychological therapy to treat environmental factors are needed.
