40-60%
Onset of schizophrenia usually occurs between ages:
16-30 y/o
If a child has abnormal emotional reactions at a young age and then later develops schizophrenia, they will have more (positive or negative) sx and a (better or worse) prognosis.
1/2 of these pts will complain of ______ sx
More negative sx, worse prognosis
Depression sx
Potential causes of schizophrenia include (3)
Genes –> strong genetic component
Overactive dopamine system
Viral infections
Non medical tx for schizophrenia
Pt education, hospitalization for acute loss of fxn, involve families, self-care training, social skills training, self help groups, prevention (creating a safe environment to decrease relapse)
Neuroleptic drug with the most extrapyramidal sx
Haldol
Side effects of neuroleptic drugs
EPS, sedation, orthostasis, QT prolongation, decreased sz threshold, increased prolactin, anticholinergic
EPS is most likely to occur in what pt population? (think age and gender)
young men and older women
Neuroleptics don’t usually cause laryngeal/pharyngeal spasms but if they do, what should you have on hand to treat the respiratory sx?
O2, diphenhydramine and benztropine
How do the atypical antipsychotics ADRs differ from the neuroleptics?
Hyperglycemia, increased prolactin is less severe, increase in lipids, less EPS. Otherwise they are the same
In what case would Clozaril be beneficial for a pt to take? What must be monitored?
Schizophrenia pts w/ suicidal thoughts. Must monitor WBC for agranulocytosis
