What percentage of the population does schizophrenia affect?
1% (20 million people worldwide)
Classification
Organising symptoms into categories based on which symptoms cluster together in sufferers i.e. categorising the symptoms of schizophrenia. Two systems: DSM-5 (US) and ICD-11 (international).
Diagnosis
Deciding whether someone has a particular mental illness using the classifications.
DSM-5
Two positive symptoms are needed over a minimum period of 6 months.
ICD-11
Two or more negative symptoms are needed for a positive diagnosis.
Positive symptoms
Atypical symptoms experienced in addition to normal experiences (an excess or distortion of normal functioning).
Hallucinations and distortions.
Negative symptoms
Atypical experiences that represent the loss of a usual experience (a diminution or loss of normal functioning) e.g., depression.
Hallucinations
disturbances of perception in any of the senses. False perceptions that either have no basis in reality or are distorted perceptions of things that are. Most common is auditory hallucinations (hearing voices).
Delusions
Firmly held irrational beliefs that have no basis in reality. Four types.
