Biological, psychological, environmental
What are the biological factors of psychosis?
Genetic, neurotransmitters, anatomy and diseases of the brain
Which neurotransmitters are involved in psychosis?
Dopamine D2 and Serotonin 5-HT
What anatomical/disease factors are involved in psychosis?
enlarged ventricles, smaller frontal lobe, flu when pregnant, hx of epilepsy
What is the characteristic of a positive symptom?
exaggeration of a normal function
What is the characteristic of a negative symptom?
diminished or loss of a normal function, hardest to treat, most destructive symptom to the pt
What are the positive symptom groups?
content of thought, form of thought, perception, sense of self
Identify the delusion types
of persecution, of grandeur, of reference, of control and influence, somatic, nihilistic
Define Delusions of Persecution
pt feels threatened, believes others will harm him
Define Delusions of Grandeur
pt thinks they are someone very important, or the best at something
Define Delusions of Reference
pt believes they are receiving messages from reference materials like the TV, a magazine, etc
Define Delusions of Control and Influence
pt believes someone is controlling their behavior
Define Somatic Delusion
pt holds a delusion about their own body, ex: thinks they have worms in their eyes, or think they are pregnant
Define Nihilistic delusions
pt believes that they or something in the world does not exist
Define Idea of Reference
pt believes other people are talking/laughing about them when they see a group conversing
