Schaffers stages of attachment Flashcards
Attachment
Asocial stage
First few weeks, same response to humans and objects
Indiscriminate attachment
2-7 months, preference for familiar people
(No stranger or separation anxiety)
Specific attachment
Stranger and separation anxiety in regard to one particular adult (the primary attachment figure(65% the mother))
Multiple attachment
More attachment directed to more than one adult
(Secondary attachment)
Schaffer and Emerson’s procedure
60 working class mothers from Glasgow, self reported babies monthly separation and stranger anxiety
Schaffer and Emerson’s findings
Found that attachment behaviour progressed, and found 4 stages of attachment
(Asocial, indiscriminate, specific attachment, multiple attachments)
Explain the external validity in this research
External validity is good since mothers observing babies there more babies are not stresses and it’s naturalistic
(Yet behaviour might not be noted down accurately)
Is there poor evidence of the asocial stage?
Yes, since babies have bad co-ordination so it may just seem asocial
Real world application
There’s no harm having babies in daycare during asocial and indiscriminate stage, until the specific attachment stage
Generalisability
Data from 1960, and only observing working class mothers from Glasgow
(Multiple attachments may be different in collectivist cultures (Ijzendoorn))
