A

Asocial stage: in first few weeks of life, an infants behaviour towards humans is similar to how its like towards inanimate objects. however schaffer and emmersons dont believe this stage to be entirely ‘asocial’ as they believe that babies still show signs of comfort towards certain familiar people

A

indiscriminate attachment: 2-7 months show more observable social behaviour where their behaviour between human and inanimate objects is distinctively different, showing preference towards humans. they also recognise and prefer company of familiar people but will generally accept company and ‘cuddles’ from anyone. no separation anxiety or stranger anxiety

A

specific attachment: around 7 months babies are now forming an attachment to one particular person, showing signs of distress when separated from them (separation anxiety) and stranger anxiety towards unfamiliar people. this person who the baby is specifically attached to is called the primary attahment figure (usually the mother in 65% of cases)

multiple attachment: they start to extend from their primary attachment figure and form multiple attachments with other people who they regularly spend time with. these relationships are called secondary attaachments. founds that 29% of children form a secondary attachment a month after forming their first primary attachment
