What did Schaffer and Emerson investigate ?
They aimed to investigate the formation of early attachments,at the age which they developed their emotional intensity and whom they were directed
Method of the key study : Facts
-60 babies 31 male,29 female
-From Glasgow
-Majority from skilled working class
Method of the key study :
Babies and their mothers were visited at home every month for the first year and again at 18 months.
-The researchers asked the mother’s questions about the kind of protest their babies showed in 7 everyday separations
Types of separation shown by the babies :
Separation anxiety - adult leaving the room
Stranger anxiety - infants anxiety response to unfamiliar adults
Findings :
Babies between 25- 32 weeks ; 50% of babies showed signs of separation anxiety towards a particular adult.
Who was the child attached to (25-32 weeks) ?
-Attachment tended to be to the caregiver who was most interactive and sensitive to infant signals and facial expressions.
-This was not necessarily the person with whom the infant spent the most time
Results - 40 weeks of age :
80% of babies had a specific attachment and 30% showed multiple attachments
