Q

Revenge of loan

A

Despite Antonio and Shylock having an overwhelming relationship in the past which included Antonio’s disrespectful way of communication and treating Shylock badly due to his religion, Shylock still chooses to help Antonio and Bassanio due to the thought of taking revenge. He uses GOLD to lure Antonio and Bassanio into a trap . This conveys that Shylock felt discriminated against and felt a strong need to show that even jews ( the minority ) had the same feelings as a christian and can take revenge. Quote: ‘‘if you prick us, do we not bleed…if you wrong us, shall we not revenge” He felt that he represented the jews and needed to make a Christian regret his misdeeds.

Q

Mercy on Portia

A

In the casket scene, Portia is shown to have a strong denial of the challenge assigned by her father to suitors. She complains to Nerissa of how she feels helpless and frustrated and wants to choose her love rather than being forced. This clearly shows that women were not as respected of their needs and wants. There is no mercy shown on women and their opinions. Portia’s wish was not valued much, such that she had to break laws and rules in order to get together with the love of her life.

Q

Shylock’s greed

A

When Shylock was told that his daughter had run away with Lorenzo, he was sad that his daughter had taken his ducats together with her.He started calling his own daughter, sloppy and lazy. Since he doesn’t trust christians and he values his riches and wealth more than his daughter, it tells me that shylock would rather lose the jewels by having them adorn Jessica’s corpse in the coffin for burial than to lose them that way. Shylock also appears intensely angry such that he wishes harm for his daughter and cares more about money than his relationship with jessica.Shylock agonizes over the loss of his money and is reported to run through the streets crying, “O, my ducats! O, my daughter!” (II.viii.15). With these words, he apparently values his money at least as much as his daughter, suggesting that his greed outweighs his love.

A

Shylock is guilty of plotting murder and that half his money must be given to jessica and must turn into christian. This shows that in the court scene the Christians sided with Antonio and found no wrong in his action but singled out Shylock and gave him severe punishment which even stripped him from his identity. The fact that discrimination is happening in court shows how severe and systematic discrimination is.

Q

Antonio has mercy ?

A

Given that Antonio decides not to seize Shylock’s goods as punishment for conspiring against him, we might consider Antonio to be merciful. But we may also question whether it is merciful to return to Shylock half of his goods, only to take away his religion and his profession. By forcing Shylock to convert, Antonio disables him from practicing usury, which, according to Shylock’s reports, was Antonio’s primary reason for berating and spitting on him in public. Antonio’s compassion, then, seems to stem as much from self-interest as from concern for his fellow man

Q

Antonio and greed

A

During the scene in which Shylock and Antonio make a bond, Antonio is seen to say that he expects to return thrice the amount of ducats shylock has lent him.He says this because he felt a strong greedy thought as he has always had fortune. However, he doesn’t know the consequence of the risk he has taken and that he led himself into a false sense of security, because wealth is one that is not liable.

Advice from nerissa

A

Nerissa explains to Portia that she believes that having too much money can cause just as many problems as not having enough money. She continues by saying that those who live the longest are typically somewhere in the middle in terms of wealth. Nerissa identifies the theme of wealth and greed as she recognizes that Portia’s wealth comes with its share of challenges.
