mitch is a foil character to stanley , contrasting his brutish manliness with kindness and compassion - however this does make him a target for blanches manipulation,

this gentleman attitude is a facade for mitch and rather awkward however this may be one of the reasons that Blanche is so attracted to him , preferring fantasy over reality

A

I shall but love thee better after death

both have dead lovers, a trait which blanche can be manipulative about
it also brings a connection to the two , a connection of compassion , uncommonly seen in the play where sheer desire for sex, money, etc drives love.
however the use of a poem is a facade of blanches, trying to seem aristocratic and romantically European. Confirmed by the irony in Blanche saying “sorrow makes for sincerity”

A

I can’t stand a naked light bulb, any more than I can a rude remark or a vulgar action.

the light represents purity and transparency, Blanche is trying to conceal the truth due to an impurity.

There is irony in this statement, Blanches rude remark caused her husbands suicide after finding about his sexuality. A vulgar action also put her in the position she is in, being mixed up with a seventeen year old boy. The audiance, like mitch are unaware of this at this point in the play, therefore the sense of shock is felt by both. The relationship is doomed to fail with Blanche acting a facade the entire time, built on lies.
