Scene 9 Flashcards
Antigone's Death
Chorus: The gods cannot escape her, or humans whose whole life is a day…
Antigone!
Chorus: Here comes Antigone, daughter of sorrow, walking the road to death’s bed.
My sister.
Antigone: So death will be my husband.
Antigone.
Antigone: Everyone I love is dead. Where’s my sister? Ismene!
I’m here, sweetheart. Right here.
Antigone: My father leaned on me, but I have no one to lean on.
You were our father’s eyes, not me. You guided his steps, held him up when he stumbled. You washed the bloody pus that oozed from his eye sockets. You helped him bathe and put bread in his mouth.
Ismene: You were our father’s eyes, not me. You guided his steps, held him up when he stumbled. You washed the bloody pus that oozed from his eye sockets. You helped him bathe and put bread in his mouth.
It should have been me to do those things. I was the older sister. It should have been me. But my gut turned over every time he touched me. You must have been his sister then. Because what kind of father would ask such things of a daughter?
Antigone: Are you mocking me? I’ll be gone soon enough, walled up in darkness.
No one’s mocking you, sweetheart.
Antigone: The blue of the pool looked so cool, but the water was almost hot.
I don’t remember that day.
Antigone: I didn’t know. I didn’t know…
Rest your head, sweetheart. Such soft hair. Such a little package.
Antigone: Polyneices! Where are you?
Antigone!
Creon: My God. Is this true?
Antigone, look at me.
