Scene 10 Quotes Flashcards
Which stage directioms show Blanche’s worsening mental state?
[Lurid reflections appear on the walls around Blanche. The shadows are of a grotesque and menacing form]
Through these hallucinations, Williams could be emphasising how Blanche’s imagination, which she once used as a source of comfort and escapism, has now turned on her.
Which quotes show Stanley’s extreme disrespect for Blanche while also portraying his innate sense of entitlement?
Stanley: You think I’ll interfere with you? Ha-ha!
Stanley later in the same scene
Stanley (softly): Come to think of it— maybe you wouldn’t be bad— to interfere with
Similar to Mitch, Stanley feels entitled to Blanche’s body and sexual autonomy as compensation for being lied to. This, of course, makes no sense at all, showing the contradictions of men. Blanche, is “too dirty” to associate or “interfere” with, yet they choose to “interfere” with her anyways. In their minds, their desire for Blanche’s sexuality overrides Blanche’s desire to deceive others in order to live a happier life. This is one of the ways Williams demonstrates the double standard between man and women, as Blanche is shamed for giving in to her desires while these men aren’t.
What does Stanley say which implies that Blanche’s fate was inevitable?
“We’ve had this date with each other since the beginning!”
This implies that Stanley views his assault of Blanche as inevitable, which could link to the patriarchal idea of men lacking self control and ‘needing’ to be sexually promiscuous, even at the cost of a woman’s wellbeing.
