scene 1 Flashcards
scene w/ jack and chris and scene w/ jack after he talks to rachel
Cue line- Chris: “You’ll figure it out. And you just wait, there will be more.”
“Jack! You got your box! Congratulations!”
Jack:”Um…thanks?
“What have you been telling him? … Look Jack, I’m not exactly sure what Chris has told you about that box, but know that having a box is super great.”
Jack: “Really?”
“Sure! I’ve got report cards, old school programs, the belts I’ve gotten in Judo. All kinds of things.”
Chris: “All kinds of things. Sure. Nothing bad about the box if you’re little Miss Perfect.”
“I’ll see you in class, Jack. Don’t listen to Ms.Know-It-All over there okay?”
Cue Line- (to rachel) Jack: “Bye.”
“Is Rachel okay?”
Jack: “I guess so.”
“You’re such a guy. I saw that look on her face. She’s not okay. It’s her dad, isn’t it ?”
Jack: “Well, it’s her stepdad.”
“Oh. Why’s that? Mike’s kind of cool. I mean, they’ve always gotten along okay.”
Jack: “He wants her to call him Dad. I think her mom does, too. She’s been carrying around a Father’s Day card in her box.”
“Oh. That’s got to be rough. How did your first day with your box go?”
Jack:”Not good.”
“I’m sorry Jack. It’ll get better. It always does.”
Jack:” Really? What do you know about it?”
“Excuse me?”
Jack:”Holly, you’re a teacher’s pet, one of those perfect students. You have a black belt in Judo. You’re a great soccer player, and you’re the school mascot. Your parents are still together, and I see them at every single one of your events and shows and games. You’re probably going to win the student council election, and-“
“Jack, I know you’re going to vote for Neddy, and it’s fine. He’s your friend. I really don’t care.”
Jack:”You’re not going to give me anything for my box?”
“No! Look, I hate that Neddy is mad at me right now for running against him, but we’re all friends. I’d love it if you did vote for me, but I’m not going to force you to. You get to decide.”
Jack:”But what about the box?”
“Like I said, you get to decide.”
Jack:”It doesn’t feel like it. And you’re sure not carrying anything that’s hard to deal with. What do you know about it, anyway?”
“I know more than you think.”
Jack:”I doubt it. Maybe Chris is right. Maybe I should throw away the report card, and Rachel should toss the stupid Father’s Day card. Maybe we all should get rid of our boxes and be free!”
“Did Chris tell you why she threw her box away?”
