The social security number is requested so they can compare the names to the ones in their current database and use as a physician identifier to differentiate those physicians with similar names.

Social Security Numbers are confidential. This request should not be accommodated. Suggest using a different identifier, such as a hospital specific- provider identifier. Consider modifying the policy to delineate specific fields which should not be provided except under specific circumstances.
