Scales Of Production Flashcards
What are the four types of production ?
Prototype/ one off
Batch production
Mass production
Continuous production
What are the advantages and disadvantages to one off production ?
Advantages: high quality crasftmenship, prototypes can be tested
Disadvantages: expensive, requires specialist labour, time consuming
What is the different between additive manufacture and subtractive manufacture ?
Additive: builds up the polymer form in layers
Subtractive: takes away material from the polymer
Very little waste is produced in additive
What are the advantages and disadvantages of batch production ?
Advantages: groups of products are made to reduce waste, templates and jigs can be reused to produce identical products
Disadvantages: downtime between batches
What is batch production ?
Many items if the same product are produced Eg menu stands
Batch production is cheaper per product than making just one
What are the advantages and disadvantages of mass production ?
Advantages: high volumes can be produced, materials can be bulk purchased at cheaper rates, low skilled workforce required
Disadvantages: expensive to set up due to specialised machinery, expensive equipment
How does mass production work ?
Products are made in large volumes often with an assembly line of workers who fit parts together
One example is blister packs containing tablets
What are the advantages and disadvantages of continuous production ?
Advantages: 24/7 production using an automated system, high volumes can be produced, materials purchased in bulk at cheaper rates
Disadvantages: expensive to set up due to specialized equipment, machine repair is expensive
How does continues production work ?
24 hours a day, 7 days a week and possible 365 days a year
Products are made from a polymer using continues methods such as injection moulding is likely to be a method used to form a plastic
