Scale Flashcards
Why do we use “Scale”?
To make maps easy to use.
To be able to fit all the information we need onto a page.
When would be use a Small Scale Map
When we want to make a very BIG area small
When would we use a Large Scale Map?
When we want to show a smaller area in more detail.
What is a WORD SCALE?
When the scale is written out in words :
e.g. 1 cm represents 10km.
If a word scales on a map is: 1cm represents 500m, what would be the distance between two places that are:
5cm apart
5 x 500
= 2500m or 2,5km
If a word scales on a map is: 1cm represents 1000m, what would be the distance between two places that are:
18cm apart
18 x 1000
= 18 000m or 18km
How would you define ‘SCALE’?
When an object is drawn smaller than in real life and it is the exact number of times smaller than the real life version
What is one of the difficulties when drawing scale?
Difficult to draw round objects on a flat surface (LIKE THE EARTH)
