What is scale
A
Maps have to be drawn smaller than in real life so that they can fit on a piece of paper.
Therefore, we need to use a scale so we can find the length of things in real life.

A
e.g. 1cm = 1km

What is scale as ratio?
A
Scale written as a ratio e.g. 1:1,000,000 (1cm on map = 10km on Earth)

How do we use scale to measure distance?
A
The straight line distance (as a crow flies)
The actual distance, by roads, rivers etc., this usually involves going down bendy lines.
