Scalars And Vectors And Other Forces Flashcards
What is a Scalar quantity?
A scalar quantity is a quantity with only a magnitude.
What is a vector quantity?
A vector quantity is a quantity with a magnitude and a direction.
List 5 scalar quantities:
- Mass
- Time
- Speed
- Energy
- Volume
- Power
- Temperature
List 3 vector quantities
- Displacement
- Velocity
- Weight
- Force
- Acceleration
- Momentum
What is displacement?
Displacement describes the direction in which a distance is measured in.
What is the magnitude of a force measured in?
Newtons
What is the equasion for speed?
Time
What is the equasion for velocity?
Displacement/Time
What is the equasion for force?
Mass x Acceleration
What is a force?
A force is a push or pull that acts on an object. It is measured in Newtons (N).
What is Newtons first law of motion?
An object at rest remains at rest, and an object in motion remains in motion at constant speed and in a straight line unless acted on by an unbalanced force.
What is Newtons second law of motion?
The acceleration of an object is directly related to the net force and inversely related to its mass. For an object to move/accelerate the forces must be unequal.
What dies Newtons third law of motion state?
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
What can forces do to an object?
Forces can change the shape of an object or change its state of rest or motion.
What is mass commonly measured in?
A top pan balance.
