SC.5.N.1.1: Flashcards
Define a problem, use appropriate reference materials to support scientific understanding, plan and carry out scientific investigations, and evaluate procedures.
What is the first step in the scientific process?
Ask a testable question or identify a problem.
What is a hypothesis?
A testable prediction based on observations and prior knowledge.
What is a variable in an experiment?
Something that can change or be changed in a scientific experiment.
What is the independent variable?
The variable that is changed on purpose to test its effect.
What is the dependent variable?
The variable that is measured or observed during the experiment.
What are controlled variables (constants)?
Variables that are kept the same to ensure a fair test.
Why is it important to repeat an experiment?
To ensure the results are accurate and reliable.
What tools might a 5th grader use in a science experiment?
Ruler, thermometer, stopwatch, balance, measuring cup, etc.
What is data?
Information gathered during an experiment, often in the form of measurements or observations.
What should a scientist do after collecting data?
Analyze the data and draw a conclusion to see if it supports the hypothesis.
What is the purpose of using charts, tables, and graphs in experiments?
To organize and communicate data clearly.
What is a conclusion?
A summary of what was learned from the experiment, based on evidence.
