SC20 Fuels Flashcards
How can impurities in fossil fuels can result in acid rain
Sulphur in coal
Burnt / Oxidised to form sulphur dioxide
Sulphur dioxide dissolves in clouds to form sulphuric acid
In an acid rain experiment which acid should be used
Sulphuric acid
As acid rain is made from sulphuric acid
Explain the trend in viscosity of fractions in a fractionating column
As you go down the column viscosity increases
As the molecules get larger, and intermolecular forces are stronger
How is the greenhouse effect caused by gases produced by complete combustion of diesel
- Carbon dioxide produced
- Absorb heat radiated from earth
- Reradiates heat back into atmosphere
Why does inconmplete combustion produce carbon monoxide as a product
- Insufficient oxygen
- To react all carbon into carbon dioxide
Why does increasing carbon atoms cause an increase in boiling point
- Strong forces between molecules
Why are butane and pentane neighbouring members of the same homologous series
- Differ by CH2
- They both have the same general formula of CnH2n+2
why do longer alkanes have higher boiling points
stronger intermolecular forces
there is more surface area between them
so more energy is required to move them apart
