sc Flashcards
a day when earth’s rotation axis is the most toward or away from the sun
solstice
a spinning motion
rotation
when the moon moves into earth’s shadow
lunar eclipse
less of the moons near side is lit each night
waning phase
more of moons nea side is lit each night
waxing phase
The central, darker part of the shadow where light is totally blocked
umbra
the daily rise and fall of sea levels
tide
the large dark areas of the moons craters
maria
the lighter part of the shadow where light is partially blocked
penumbra
the line on which an object rotates
rotation axis
the motion of an object around another object
revolution
the path an object follows as it moves around another
orbit
the portion of the moon or planet reflecting light as seen from the earth
phase
a day when the earth’s rotation is leaning along earths orbit, neither towards nor away from the sun.
equinox
when the moon’s shadow appears on the earth’s surface
solar eclipse
why does the earth orbit the sun
gravity
what causes the seasons on earth
the tilt of earths axis and the way it rotates around the sun
When does each solstice and equinox occur? (not on test) what is happening during this time
dec.-winter in the northern, summer in the southern
march-spring in the northern, fall in the southern
sep.-fall in the northern, spring in the southern
june- summer in the northern, winter in the southern
What is one way scientists think the moon was formed
an asteroid collided with earth, formed a ring around earth causing a chunk of the object to come off and enter the orbit
draw a new moon
all black
draw a waxing crescent
small amount of light showing on the right
draw a first quarter moon
light half way on the right
Draw a waxing gibbous
little over half moon, light on the right
Draw a full moon
all white
draw a waning gibbous
a little over half moon, light on the left
draw a third quarter moon
light halfway on the left
draw a waning crescent
small amount of light showing on the left
draw a solar eclipse
from right to left, sun, moon, earth. penumbra on the outside, umbra on the inside.
What causes tides and how often a day do they occur
The strength of moon’s gravity on the oppisite side of earth’s, causes it. It happens twice a day
What is the difference between a spring tide and a neap tide
A spring tide is when the sun’s and the moon’s produce higher high tides and lower low tides.
A neap tide is when the sun’s effect reduces the moon’s effect and high tides are lower and low tides are higher
