Q
A 12 year old boy is brought into the emergency department after a road traffic accident. He is talking and complaining of pain in his left leg, and discomfort in the back of his neck. He has been stabilized in a collar and blocks and is awaiting review from the trauma team. He weighs 40kg.
What is the most appropriate treatment for the management of pain in this patient?
A. Oral Ibuprofen B. Oral paracetamol C. IV paracetamol D. Oral morphine E. IV morphine
A
IV morphine.
Oral route is not a good idea for trauma patients as pain causes delayed gastric emptying, agitation and stress, which can promote the sympathetic response further.
Morphine is the only appropriate drug in this case, providing sufficient pain relief.
