SB2- cells and control Flashcards
what do out cells have to do in order for us to grow and survive?
divide
what is asexual reproduction?
when organisms use mitosis to reproduce
what happens in interphase?
- the DNA is spread out in long strings
- it has to grow and increase the amount of subcellular organisms
- duplicates DNA
- form X-shaped chromosomes
give two examples of subcellular structures
- mitochondria
- ribosomes
explain what happens in prophase
the chromosomes condense, the membrane around the nuclease breaks down and the chromosomes lie free in the cytoplasm
explain what happens in metaphase
the chromosomes line up at the centre of the cell
explain what happens in anaphase
spindle fibres pull apart the chromosomes, then the chromatids split to each side of the cell
explain what happens in telophase
membranes form around the chromatids which is now the nucleus of the new cell
what is cytokinesis?
the cytoplasm and the cell membrane divide to form two new separate cells
what is the formula to work out the number of cells?
number of cells = 2n
n= number of divisions
if you start with one cells after 4 divisions of mitosis how many cells will there be?
2 to the 4 = 2x2x2x2 = 16
