SB1g Enzyme Action Flashcards
1
Q
What is a protein
A
A protein is a large 3D molecule formed form s chain of amino acids . The 3D shape is caused by folding of the chain , which depends on the sequence of the amino acids in the chain . The 3D shape of enzymes is important in how they work because within that shape is a small pocket called the active site
2
Q
What does it mean for an enzyme to be denatured
A
If the active site changes shape to much due to things like change in pH or temperature the substrate will no longer fit in the active site and the enzyme will no longer catalyse the reaction
3
Q
What is the active site
A
The active site is where the substrate of the enzyme fits at the start of the reaction
