SB 1 Types of Conformity Flashcards
Conformity definition
Conformity can be defined as changing behaviour or beliefs in order to come into line with others in a group, in response to social pressure.
What are the 3 types of conformity?
Compliance
Identification
Internalisation
Compliance
Compliance is a change in our behaviour but not our opinion as a consequence of a request from someone.
It is when a person pretends to agree with the group, while maintaining their own beliefs.
Identification
Identification is when we change our behaviour and/or opinion when we want to identify with a particular group.
Publicly conforming, but not necessarily a private change in opinion.
If they leave the group, the behaviour/opinion may stop.
Internalisation
When a group has such an influence on a person that they permanently adopt the behaviour and carry it out even if they are no longer a group member.
This is both public and private conformity.
