Choked Sound (causes)
Too much pressure from lower lip
Too little mouthpiece in mouth
Lay of mouthpiece too close
Reed too thin. Closes.
Choked Sound (remedies)
Say “A” and “Q,” lip firm to teeth, pressure from jaw structure.
Think of a “dot” 1/2 in. from tip of reed in mouth.
Try mouthpiece that blow easily for student’s mouth structure.
Get reed with more heart.
Wobbly Sound (causes)
Upper lip instead of teeth touching m.p.
Wobbly Sound (remedies)
Always anchor teeth to m.p. first
Rough Squak (causes)
Too much m.p.
Reed too stiff
Rough Squak (remedies)
Less m.p. in mouth
Make sides and heart of reed lighter
Blows hard/leak (causes)
Poor pads and/or keys
Blows hard/leak (remedies)
Check octave keys, look for bent keys, bad pads
Weak and nasal (causes)
Air stream is too slow
Weak and nasal (remedies)
student must feel faster air with resistance from m.p.
Poor intonation (causes)
Tenseness of throat
Inconsistency of adjustments in pads
Poor intonation (remedies)
Sing and match tones using “ah”
Check thickness of opening when pads are open on various notes
