Define pollution
Any harmful change in the air, water, land or any aspect of the environment due to human action is called pollution.
What are pollutants?
The things, such as smoke or waste, that cause pollution are called pollutants.
What are polluters?
The people and agents that cause pollution are known as polluters.
What causes pollution?
Releasing exhaust from vehicles, discharge of sewage by factories and from households into water bodies, throwing garbage on the road or bursting crackers are some of the actions that cause pollution.

What are the causes of air pollution?
- Natural causes: forest fires, volcanoes
- Human-made causes: smoke from vehicles and factories, mining, deforestation
What are the causes of water pollution?
- Dumping of household, agricultural and industrial waste and sewage into the water bodies
- Oil spills
What are the causes of soil pollution?
- Accumulation of solid waste from homes and industries in soil
- Harful chemicals present in fertilisers used by farms seep into the soil
What are the causes of noise pollution?
- Loudspeakers and honking vehicles
- Noise from heavy industries
