Satelite Remote Sensing Flashcards
What is imagery
Visible representation of objects detected by any portion of the electromagnetic spectrum
What is ephemeris?
Daily positional correction data sent to a GPS satellite. Also info about stars moon sun and planets
What is the electromagnetic spectrum?
Wavelengths of emr
What does narrow band refer to
A scanner that only detects a limited range of the spectrum
What’s photogrammetry?
Science of obtaining reliable information from images
What is a photo mosaic?
Composite image formed by piecing aerial photos together. Can be refered to as controlled if there is a ground reference to control points
Name and describe the two types of orbit that we went over in lectures
Polar
- 900 km alt
- ns orbit
- 90% coverage
- sun synchronous
Geosynchronous
- synced with ground
- 36000 km
- follows earths rotation
- same spot image
What is reflective and thermal infrared?
Reflective is X-ray
Thermal is radar
Name the segments of the emr from shortest to longest
Gamma X-ray Uv Visible Infrared Radar Fm Tv Shortwave Am
What’s the difference between optical and space born sensors in data collection?
Optical sensors collect reflectance data
Space born sensors detect info in wavelength bands.
-sensor catches data that matches predetermined bandwidth
Why is infrared so useful to foresters
Infrared shows the greatest differentiation in vegetation allowing us to determine health and type of vegetation
What are color composites?
Combination of 3 spectral bands from sensor into 3 display channels on user interface
Forestry applications of satellite remote viewing
Hyperspectral imagery
National forest measuring and monitoring system- Landsat
What is hyperspectral imagery?
Imagery used to detect forest health and climate changes
