OPTICAL TEXTURE
an artist may paint with expressive brushstrokes who’s texture conveys the physical and emotional energy of both the artist and his or her subject
PHYSICAL TEXTURE
This is a third category of textures who’s fleeting forms are subject to change like clouds is smoke lens bubbles and liquids
EPHEMERAL TEXTURE
Is the physical volume of a shape and the space that it occupies.
It can be representational or abstract
FORM
Can be modelled (added form)
Carved (subtracted form) and constructed (build form)
it can be created from sculptural materials like play rock lester wood stone concrete cast and constructed metal plastic resins glass and mixed media
THREE DIMENSIONAL FORM
Construct the illusion of 3d in 2d media by a skillful manipulation of the visual elements
TWO DIMENSIONAL FORM
Are essentially a set of criteria which are used to explain how the visual elements are arranged in a work of art.
THE PRINCIPLES OF ART
The principles of art help combat this gray area to some.they allow us to communicate what makes a great painting great with an element of
OBJECTIVITY AND CONSISTENCY
Refers to the visual weight of the elements of the composition.
It is a sense that the painting feels stable and “feels right”.
BALANCE
in which both sides of a composition have the same elements in the same position as in a mirror image or the two sides of a face
SYMMETRY
In which the composition is balance due to the contrast of any of the elements of art.
For example a large circle on one side of a composition might be balanced by a small square on the other side
ASYMMETRY
In which elements are equally spaced around a central point as in the spokes coming out of the hub of a bicycle tire
RADIAL SYMMETRY
Can be achieved by juxtapositions of any of the elements of art
CONTRAST
Among the first places that are viewers is drawn
CONTRAST
Is an example of contrast
NEGATIVE AND POSITIVE SPACE
The artist creates an area of the composition that is visually dominant and commands the viewers attention
This is often achieved by contrast
EMPHASIS
Is the result of using the elements of art such that they move the viewers eye around and within the image.
MOVEMENT
Is the uniform repetition of any of the elements of art or any combination thereof.
PATTERN
Created by movement implied through the repetition of elements of art in a non-uniform but organized way.
RHYTHM
You want your painting to feel unified such that all the elements fit together comfortably
UNITY/VARIETY
A bit vague compared to some of the other principles
generally speaking it refers to how well all the visual elements work together in a work of art
