Sarah Flashcards
Chemistry chapter 2 key terms
Matter
The material of the universe
Atom
The fundamental unit of which elements are confused
Compound
A substance with constant composition that can be broken down into elements by chemical processes
Molecule
A group of atoms bonded together, representing the smallest fundamental unit of a chemical compound
Element
Simplest substances, can not be broken down using chemical reactions. Same number of protons.
Graphite
Soft black lustrous from that conducts electricity and is used in lead pencils and electrolytic anodes,.
Diamond
Clear and typically colorless. Crystalline form of pure carbon and the hardest naturally occurring substance
Buckminsterfullerene
A form of carbon having molecules of atoms arranged in a polyhedron resembling a geodesic sphere
Solid
Three dimensions, a sample of matter that retains its shape and density when not confined
Liquid
A substance that flows freely but is of constant volume, having a consistency like that of water and oil.
Gas
An air-like fluid substance which expands freely to fill any space available, irrespective of its quantity
Physical properties
Any properties that is measurable often referred to as observable.
Chemical properties
A chemical property is a characteristic or behavior of a substance that may be observed when undergong a chemical change or reaction.
Physical change
Changes affecting the form of a chemical substance but not its chemical composition. Physical changes are used to separate mixtures into their component compounds
Chemical change
A chemical reaction involving the rearrangement
