SAR Flashcards
What are the 3 levels of SAR?
Alert, Distress, Uncertainty
What phase exists when there is knowledge of a situation that may need to be monitored or to have more information gathered, but does not require moving resources?
Uncertainty
What phase exists when grave or imminent danger requiring immediate response to the distress scene threatens a craft or person?
Distress
What phase exists when a craft or person is experiencing some difficulty and may need assistance, but is not in immediate danger or in need of immediate response?
Alert
The location in the search pattern where the SRU begins searching is called what?
CSP– Commence Search Point
These patterns are best used when the datum is established within close limits, when a very high coverage immediately around the datum is desired, and the area to be searched is not extensive. These patterns resemble the spokes of a wheel and cover circular search areas.
Sector search patterns
What patterns are used when the inteded route of the search object is known?
Trackline
What patterns are used to cover one end of an area first or to change direction of the search legs where sun glare or swell direction makes this necessary?
Creeping line
This is a tool used by coast guard SAR mission coordinators to alert the maritime public to a distress or potential distress situation.
UMIB – Uncorrelated Marine Information Broadcast
What are both radio and self – locating, and are tools for determining total water current in a search area?
Datum Marker Buoys – DMBs
What satellite data system is used to receive and forward information transmitted from the SLDMB to the coast guard?
Argos
How long are SLDMBs operational?
14 to 30 days after deployment
How deep does the water need to be to drop a datum marker buoy?
10 ft or greater
How many people are required for an ice rescue?
Minimum of 4
How thick does ice have to be to walk on it?
2 in
